A. Ramachandran
Ramachandran A. is a painter, muralist and a sculptor. He paints monumental mural-sized paintings. His imagery is distinctive, with strong echoes of the past appearing in almost every series of works. However, the influence is integrated and assimilated to create these works with his personal vision stamped on them. In the early period one comes across vignettes of the Kerala murals painted in the style of Piero della Francesca or Michaelangelo-like bodies tumbling out of a fiery sun. There is also a heavy use of chiaroscuro and surrealism in the negation of the face; instead a cowl or veil obscures it, leaving dense behind. His recent series of works owe their sinuousness of line and sensuousness of form to the Ajanta frescoes, floral and miniature paintings. A golden light pervades these large sized compositions with their voluptuous half-clad women juxtaposed against vegetal and animal life, pulsating with mythical over tones. Ramachandran was inspired by the creative energy of Ramkinkar Baji and more recently practised sculpture as his medium. He lives and works in New Delhi.
