CHRIS WAKE
What lies behind the faces that we show to the world is a constant theme for Adelaide Hills artist Chris Wake. Her paintings have a droll and somehow disturbing effect. Paintings are antipodean with characters that have Nolanesque eyes that follow the viewer, or look sideways in unease or alarm. Tilted heads turn away from each other creating a sense that in spite of the festive setting characters are caught in their own private and possibly nightmare universe.
Chris Wake has been selected as a finalist in the 2008 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, the standard was very high with over 1100 professional artists from all over Asia entering, only 30 finalists were selected. Paintings will be exhibited at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art Singapore, also in Hong Kong where final judging will take place by judges from around the world including curators from the Tate Modern, and The Guggenheim.
Participating in the Singapore Art Fair 2006 (showcasing collectable contemporary artworks from all over Asia) , Wake's work was very well received. Her work is in private and corporate collections around Australia and overseas. Chris Wake was born in Adelaide in 1960, and has been painting since 1976 with sell out exhibitions, art collectors are keeping Wake busy in the studio.
